Galata to the Golden Horn: a walking day in Beyoğlu, ending at the hammam

A one-day walking route around Şişhane — and the best way to close it out.

· 7 min read

This corner of Beyoğlu is one of Istanbul's densest walking districts. The hills tire you, but the distances are short — everything is ten minutes from everything else. The route below starts in the morning and ends at the hammam.

Morning: Galata and around

Begin at Galata Tower, but before joining the queue to go up, spend half an hour in the streets around it. Serdar-ı Ekrem Street holds some of the best-preserved façades in the city and is usually empty.

Head down to Karaköy for breakfast. The walk down takes five minutes; if you'd rather not climb back up, take the Tünel — one of the shortest underground lines in the world, running since 1875.

Midday: Şişhane and İstiklal

The area around Şişhane has filled with design shops and small galleries in recent years. Before joining İstiklal Street, take Meşrutiyet Street instead; it is noticeably quieter and the Pera Museum sits along it.

For lunch, the lanes of Asmalımescit offer plenty. The meyhanes open in the evening, but the working-day lokantas are the better midday choice.

Afternoon: the Golden Horn

The road from Şişhane down to the Golden Horn is downhill and takes fifteen minutes. Looking across from Atatürk Bridge gives the best view of the day, especially near sunset.

You can follow the shore towards Kasımpaşa or turn back and climb to Şişhane. By this point your feet are probably carrying forty thousand steps.

Evening: the hammam stop

After a day on foot, the hammam isn't a luxury but a sensible close. Hot marble releases the leg muscles that tightened through the day, and the scrub resets skin after a dusty city day.

Lilyum is a five-minute walk from Şişhane metro station, inside Aspera Golden Horn Hotel, and open until eleven at night — so whatever time you finish the route, you'll make it. The most requested session after a long walk is the medical foot massage; taken with the forty-minute traditional hammam programme, it keeps you on your feet the next day.

Evenings are the busiest window, so if you want a same-day slot, book before midday.
